Featured program: Today's Monuments Men and Women: The Role of the Military and Museums in Cultural Heritage Protection

THE MONUMENTS MEN AND WOMEN OF WORLD WAR II provided us with a roadmap for cultural heritage protection in war, which was later codified in the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property during Armed Conflict.

Despite efforts of States Parties to improve training and raise awareness, loss of cultural property during armed conflict has increased at an alarming rate in recent years. To help combat this destruction and raise awareness, the U.S. Army has recently increased its efforts to comply with the Hague Convention with its new 38G Heritage and Preservation Officer program.

Cori Wegener, Director of the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative and a former Army Monuments Officer, will provide an overview of the unique partnership between the U.S. Army and the Smithsonian to recruit, train, and deploy the next generation of Monuments Men and Women.
